Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding in 1954, it wasn't very successful when it was first published, but later it became a best seller and is now extremely famous.Several screen versions have been made.

The book takes place during some kind of war, where boys from different schools were travelling by plane and for an unknown reason, the plane crashed on a tropical island. The book has a sociological theme, about the society the boys create when they are left alone on  the island without adults to lead them, and the power struggle between group thinking and. individualism.

As already mentioned, at the start of the story the plane has crashed on the island, all the adults on the planeare dead and only the young boys are left alive. There are boys of different age groups, from 6 to 12 years old. We are introduced to the protagonist of the book, Ralp, who meets Piggy, an overweight boy with glasses. He blows in a conch to gather the boys on the island, Ralph is declared the leader since he is responsible for gathering the boys. On the plane was also a boys choir, they are much more diciplined than the other boys and their leader, Jack also wants to be the leader. They decide to maintain a smoke signal at all times, andJack and his choir become in charge of hunting and collecting food, and other boys are in charge of making shelters. It's idyllic but the power balance is weak and the moment fear strikes, individual thinking gives way to group thinking.

Ralph is the protagonist of Lord of the Flies, he is 12 years old. He is first elected to be the leader of the group of boys, he keeps his morale through the story and does not resort to violence and primal behaviour like the rest of the boys. He means well but is by no means a perfect boy, since he bullies Piggy just as much as everyone else.

I love Lord of the flies, it's truly an amazing book, definitely one of my favourites. Both the sociological and psychological issues are extremely interesting, and the characters are also very fascinating.. Not once does the book become boring. The book describes the boys's descent into depravity and violent acts in a very realistic way, with natural, threedimensional characters and in flawless language. I would recommend it to anyone!

  1. This book sounds very interesting! I love books that focus on the way people act and think. I'll write down the title of this book, maybe I'll read it one time.

Actually read this book when I was in Norway two years ago, lovely reading on the night train I'd say.
