The phantom of the opera, the movie
The movie is based on the book from 1909 with the same name. The phantom of the opera is originally French and was not published in English til 1911. It was written by Gaston Leroux.
In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber made a musical of The phantom of the opera, and in 2004, they made a movie based on the musical. It was directed by Joel Schumacher, and co-written by Webber. The movie was announced in 1989, but production didn't start til 2002 due to both Webber and the director's busy lives. In the movie, Gerard Butler stars as the phantom, and Emmy Rossum as Christine DaaƩ. Even though Gerard Butler isn't known for his singing, he has a voice that fits the character well and certainly sufficient talent for singing his parts. Emmy Rossum's acting conveys the character well, almost without fail and she sings beautifully.
The movie is about Christine DaaƩ, a young Swedish girl who works as a background singer in an opera in Paris. Her parents are dead, and when dying her father told her an angel of music would look out for her. The phantom takes advantage of that, calling himself the angel of music and giving her secret singing lessons through the walls. In the begininng of the movie, the opera house has gotten two new owners, who aren't aware of the phantom, or the damage he will do if he isn't given twenty thousand francs every month. The opera house is economically supported by the young, rich Raoul, who was also Christine's childhood sweetheart. When the lead singer in a play they rehearse almost gets crushed under a backdrop, Christine is chosen as the lead singer instead, thus making Raoul recognize her. After the play he wants to talk to her, however Christine is being led down, under the opera house, to where the phantom lives.
The setting of the movie is the opera house and very little happens outside of it.
The phantom wears a suit and a white mask which covers half his face, because of his disfigured face. The disfigurement is apparently caused by an illness. It is apparent that he is a musical genius, and he writes music, as well as plays, and sings very much. The phantom lives under the opera, and he has lived there since he was brought there as a child when escaping from being captured.
I really like this movie, even though it's very different from the book, and could almost be called a parody of the book, it's a very nice movie. The story is the life of a movie, and the story is naturally just as amzing in movie format as in book format, no matter the differences. The songs are great, which is very important since it's a musical. The music and the general soundtrack is amazing and gives the scenes very much feeling. The actors are talented singers and very good actors. The movie is one of my favourites.
